Rudy Kouhoupt was a remarkable teacher, which will become apparent when you watch the videos. He was as impeccable in his teaching as he was in his text, photographs and drawings in his articles. No one ever found a mistake in his drawings because he did preliminary drawings in pencil, built the part and only after the work (and thus, the drawing) was proven to be correct did he finally ink drawings for publication.
In 1989, I visited Rudy in his home for the first time to offer a proposal to him. That was the beginning of our new business adventure together.
Rudy was enthused about the prospect, and over the next 15 years, we produced 18 instructional videos on virtually every aspect of machining, plus three different engines of his design to challenge the machinist by doing something besides learning skills and processes.
Thousands of machinists have gotten a good solid start from Rudy's straightforward approach to teaching and machining. He liked to use the "KISS" principle in these videos as he always did in his articles. Simplicity was his middle name. He sometimes said to me, "It may not be the prettiest, but you won't find a pretty one that works any better." And I always thought to myself "and sometimes not as well."
Rudy said many times, "Get your hands dirty! So what if you make a mistake. It's not the end of the world, and there's plenty of metal waiting to be machined." He found great joy in making chips - watching a new shape gradually appear from a block or cylinder of metal. And that's exactly what he would hope for you, as well.
